Medical Ongoing: £96million striker is currently undergoing medical to join Arsenal after the Gunners agreed to pay a huge transfer fee for the superstar

Arsenal are poised to sign a new centre-forward during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners finished 10 points behind champions Liverpool in the Premier League last term, and they need to close the gap with marquee signings.

A striker is the top priority for the London giants, and Florian Plettenberg claims that talks are progressing positively with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko.

While that happens, Spanish outlet AS (page 17) report that the Gunners are leading the list of clubs interested in signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

The outlet add that the player’s representative is trying to put the striker back on the transfer market, but Atletico have a ‘non-negotiable’ stance on the Argentine.

The La Liga giants have no plans to discuss Alvarez’s sale and won’t hand him a new contract either. The 25-year-old will remain with Atletico for the 2025/26 season.

Arsenal unlikely to pursue a deal for Alvarez
The River Plate graduate joined Atletico from Manchester City last summer for £82 million.

It was a huge outlay at the time, but Alvarez has proven his credentials. He has registered 29 goals and seven assists from 54 appearances across all competitions.

The Argentine missed only seven big chances in La Liga last term. He converted an impressive 23 percent of his shots into goals. He also excelled with his distribution.

Alvarez would be a quality addition to the Arsenal ranks, but it is pretty clear that Atletico won’t entertain any offers for the marksman during the current transfer window.

Arsenal should be well aware of the same, which is why they haven’t made any approach. The focus remains on securing Sesko’s signature at the earliest possibility.

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres could be the fallback option if Sesko does not join.
