THE Rafa Nadal announced that he is retiring from active action!
With a video he uploaded on social media, the legendary Spaniard announced that he will finish his career in Malaga, where the final stage of the Davis Cup will be held in November.
“I am here to inform you that I am retiring from professional tennis,” said the 38-year-old tennis player, holder of 22 Grand Slams, with sadness in his eyes. “The truth is that the last few years have been difficult, especially these last two. I couldn’t play without restrictions. It’s a difficult decision that took me time to make, but in this life everything has a beginning and an end. I believe the time is right to bring an end to a career that has been long and far more successful than I could have ever imagined.”
And he will say “goodbye” in Spain, representing his country in the Davis Cup Finals. “I am very excited that my last tournament is the Davis Cup final, where I will represent my country. It’s coming full circle, since one of my first triumphs as a professional was the final in Seville in 2004. I feel very lucky for all that I’ve been able to experience. I want to thank the entire tennis industry, my teammates, my great rivals. I have spent many hours with them and experienced many moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.”
The truth is that in the last few days there had been rumors that the Spanish superstar would make the big decision. There was, of course, the hope that he would play one more season and could, above all, say goodbye to Roland Garros, his favorite event, from which he left victorious 14 times.
In total he has won 92 career titles (22 majors) and has been ranked No.1 in the world for 209 weeks. He won the Olympic gold medal in singles in 2008 and in doubles in 2016, while he has also celebrated winning the Davis Cup four times (2004, 2009, 2011, 2019).
His duels with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic made history and were one of the main reasons why the popularity of the sport grew over the years.
An athlete who has won everything in his career, but remains… the simple kid from Manacor, who acts like he hasn’t won… anything!
At his best he was an almost unbeatable opponent, especially on clay where he had an 81-match winning streak from 2005 to 2007 and has won a total of 63 titles! Time, however, defeats them all, just as it defeated Federer two years ago…
Tennis just isn’t the same without these two!
