Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Ane Appelkvist Stenseth smashed the competitors – Emil Iversen smashed the pole in the first ski race of the year.
THE BEITOSTOLEN: For Emil Iversen, the first ski race of the year was a solid setback. Iversen broke the staff halfway through the prologue.
– I fell and broke the pole. Then I quickly realized that it wasn’t working, so I gave up. It would have been embarrassing to go all the way to the finish line with one stick. I felt good until I broke the pole. It is difficult to say, but I felt that it could have lasted until a quarter-final today, then this will be a setback. I was looking forward to this, Iversen told NRK after the prologue.
– Scary for the competitors
Although he flagged modest ambitions before the prologue, Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was fastest of all in the prologue at Beitostølen. Klæbo won by barely a second ahead of Harald Østberg Amundsen and Erik Valnes.
– It’s hard to get started, so I need some time. But it’s okay, Klæbo told NRK after the prologue.
– It will be scary for the competitors when Klæbo announces that he is victorious, but still wins the prologue, said expert Johnsrud Sundby.
Even Northug was number seven, barely four seconds behind Klæbo.

With the first 40 runners at the finish line, Stenseth leads the prologue clearly, over three seconds ahead of Hedda Østberg Amundsen and barely five seconds ahead of Mathilde Myrvold. Julie Myhre was number five in the prologue, just under six seconds behind Stenseth.
– We know that Stenseth has an enormous capacity for prologues. But it is only in the semis and finals that we get an answer to how well the training this year has worked for her. We know she can give good prologues, so we are excited to see what she can deliver throughout the day. Both the track and the road suit her well, said Fredrik Aukland after the canon prologue.
