“I will never forget this guy even in a hurry, he made me restless…I’ve never seen such performance from an opponent player before”: Southampton coach names ONE Man United’s player who was their nightmare during their away defeat at Old Trafford

Ally McCoist was left stunned by Antony’s miss during Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Antony spurned a gift of a chance while United were 1-0 down to the Saints when he failed to properly connect with a cross from Alejandro Garnacho in the 59th minute.

Garnacho had put the ball on a plate for Antony at the back post but the Brazilian, on as a substitute for Kobbie Mainoo, tried to slide in and turn the ball home. However, he did not connect cleanly with the ball and a grateful Aaron Ramsdale was on hand in the visitors’ goal to collect the ball.

A stunned McCoist said on TNT Sports’ coverage of the match “Why’s he going to ground? “Just knock it in!

“Why did he go down? The ball across is perfect.

“Why are you falling down there? Just knock the ball into the back of the net. “It’s unbelievable.

He added, before being cut off by commentator Darren Fletcher: “Do you understand what I am trying to…”

Antony has struggled for form and confidence since his £89 million move from Ajax in 2022. He has seen the manager who signed him, Erik ten Hag, sacked and replaced by Ruben Amorim.

The 24 year-old has appeared just seven times in the Premier League this season and is yet to register a goal or an assist in the top flight. He could be given a new lease of life by Amorim, though, but in a different position to his usual place on the wing.

“I think, when we started, everybody is from scratch,” Amorim said. “We took like one month to explain that everything has a new beginning because every person deserves a new beginning and the power is in their hands because, if they show it, I will put them in to play.

“I just want to win. They are responsible to play, not me.

“He did a great job improving in that position. He has to defend more but he has the ability to do it and has to do it himself.”
