Alejandro Garnacho helped force a comeback win for Manchester United in the FA Cup on Friday night.

Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City meant the Reds have secured a place in the FA Cup fifth round. With our opponents unknown as of now, this means Ruben Amorim’s side still have a chance to defend the title they won under Erik ten Hag last season.

Alejandro Garnacho produced a man of the match performance after coming on at the interval to replace United’s latest signing Patrick Dorgu.

The Argentine wasn’t the only substitution to impact on the game, as Joshua Zirkzee scored an equaliser against the Foxes just minutes after coming on.

The win was sealed when Harry Maguire converted Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick in stoppage-time.

United got the win in the end, but the performance was below par.

Roy Keane doesn’t trust Alejandro Garnacho
Garnacho was handed the man of the match award on ITV before former United captain Roy Keane weighed in with his views on the player.

Keane argued that Garnacho is better coming off the bench and questioned whether the young forward can be trusted to have the same impact when he starts games.

“I think you can trust him when he comes off the bench,” Keane said during a live ITV broadcast. “I’m not sure it suits him when he starts. When he comes off the bench and they take more gambles, they stretch, that’s when he comes into his own.

“They put Leicester on the back foot. They got tired, lost a bit of physicality, and that’s what Garnacho does. You want to put defenders on the back foot. First-half they were playing sideways, playing sideways, but then they tested them and got their reward.

“When you’re defending as a team, a whole team, when teams are playing in front of you its easy. We (Keane and Ian Wright) could still play now. It’s when they start stretching you, running you back towards your own goal, that’s when you’re really tested and Leicester came up short. They couldn’t deal with it.”

Keane makes a valid point because Garnacho also changed the game in Bucharest after coming off the bench. United were drawing at the break until Amorim made two impactful substitutions at half-time as he threw Garnacho and Amad into the mix.

Amorim downplays Garnacho transfer talk
Ever since Amorim dropped Garnacho for the Manchester derby in December, the player’s future has been subject to speculation.

This led to interest from Chelsea and Napoli but Garnacho remained at Old Trafford throughout the January transfer window.

First, we were told that it was the head coach’s decision because some critics believed Garnacho wouldn’t suit Amorim’s system. Then, it was due to financial restraints because selling Garnacho would result in pure profit as he came from United’s academy.

Unlike Marcus Rashford, who has joined Aston Villa on loan, Garnacho got his head down and worked his way back into Amorim’s plans.

Speaking to reporters after United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City, Amorim made it clear he is ready to put discussions around Garnacho’s future behind him after refusing to get into how close the 20-year-old came to leaving in the recent transfer window.

“That is not important,” Amorim told reporters in his post-match press conference when asked how close Garnacho had been to leaving.

“We want players like Garnacho, he is really important. He changed the game with the runs behind. You can feel the opponent is getting tired, adjusting with a lot of difficulties, not in the first half but in the second half to stop Garnacho in one-against-on, we’re very happy with him and I think he helped a lot to change the game today.”

Amorim added: “He doesn’t need a big change. We are talking about the standards, just to train well, receive the information, understand we want to help him, we want to play in a different system, but it’s not complicated.

“He changed everything, he trains really well, he stayed in the bench five games in a row and every time he came on the pitch he was a different guy receiving the information and playing, so it’s simple things, it’s not a big thing. You can see it, I think he’s improving.”
