Manchester United’s rivals Arsenal have doubts over a possible summer transfer move for Matheus Cunha and it could help United in any proposed scramble for the forward’s signature.
Cunha has been named as one of the possible targets for head coach Ruben Amorim when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season. He has been a star performer for Wolves since moving from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, despite the team’s struggles this campaign.
He was linked with a move away from Molineux in January, but he instead put pen-to-paper on a new deal with the club. It has, however, since emerged that the deal includes a release clause worth around £62.5million.
Cunha continued to impress potential suitors with a stunning goal in the weekend’s FA Cup meeting against AFC Bournemouth. But it was his actions in extra time that caught the headlines.
The 25-year-old was shown a straight red card after an off the ball clash with Bournemouth player Milos Kerkez. Replays showed him appear to attempt to hit, kick and then headbutt his opponent – before having to be taken away from pitch-side.
The red card means that the Brazilian will now serve – at least – a four-match suspension. The extra match is automatically added on due to him already serving a ban earlier this season after clashing with a member of Ipswich Town’s backroom staff.
According to radio station talkSPORT, the latest red card has led to Arsenal having “reservations” about making a move for Cunha, due to concerns over his character.
Like United’s clash against Fulham, Wolves’ FA Cup tie against Bournemouth was eventually decided by a penalty shootout. Wolves ultimately fell to a 5-4 defeat from 12 yards.
