DONE DEAL: Manchester United completes first summer transfer signing, player has completed medical and arrive in june
Manchester United are planning to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United are clear favourites to sign Wolves star Matheus Cunha, it has been reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Brazilian will cost big money this summer due to his £62.5m release clause. He penned a new contract at Wolves earlier this campaign with the inclusion of the release clause. It allows him to explore a move to another club if the £62.5m is met.
United are planning to trigger his clause but have yet to agree with Wolves on what the payment terms will be. Cunha is also ready to join United regardless of the outcome of the Europa League final on Wednesday. Victory for Ruben Amorim’s side will provide them passage into the Champions League.
A host of Premier League sides have been linked with Cunha, including the likes of Newcastle United and Arsenal. There have been reports from Brazil that an agreement is close with United even agreeing to pay slightly more than the £62.5m due to add-ons.
Fabrizio Romano gives latest Matheus Cunha update
Providing an update, Romano said on his YouTube channel: “It always takes time to prepare a contract, to agree on the salary, to speak with the agent, then to agree with Wolves on the payment terms for the £62.5 million clause. So they also need to find an agreement on the payment terms.
Man United are working on it. Man United have very good connection with Mateusz Cunha, with his agents. It’s a very positive conversation. Ruben Amorim appreciates Cunha and Cunha knows that very well. So now it’s time to sort the details of the agreement, but Man United remain very confident. Despite the rumours on other clubs, there’s always been a lot of interest in Mateusz Cunha, but Man United are the clear favourites.
“The conversation is absolutely positive and we expect Man United to advance on this one in the next days. It’s not about Champions League football or winning the Europa League. It’s not about that. Cunha is keen on the move to Man United. It’s just about completing the contract agreement.”

Cunha has scored 15 goals and provided six assists in the Premier League this campaign and can provide some much needed-goal threat for Ruben Amorim next season. United’s next top scorer in the Premier League is Bruno Fernandes with eight. Only two Red Devils stars have more assists than Cunha in the top flight this season with Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo providing 10 and seven, respectively.
Speaking on the player, earlier in the season, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards told Match of the Day: “His football IQ is absolutely sensational. He’s the one who can unlock the doors. He finds the little pockets of space and makes the right decisions at the right times.
“He’s always scanning where he needs to be and always plays the right pass. He is so key in what Wolves are trying to do. He is the best at everything. Off the ball, he can do a little bit more – but on the ball, he is certainly the main man in this team.”
