“If he join Man United over City I’ll resign as a coach, I can’t withstand the shame”: Man City coach Pep Guardiola has threatened to to resign if he loses transfer to Man United

Manchester United’s ex-players might prefer to pile on the club instead of supporting it, but a Man Utd transfer has found an unlikely ally in Jamie Carragher.

The Liverpool fan favourite is usually one to lavish praise on Manchester United, or does so begrudgingly, so the club must have sealed a blinding piece of business.

United have been active in the transfer market already, sealing the signing of Enzo Kana-Biyik and following it up with the likely transfer of Matheus Cunha.

Liam Delap looks like he’s next on the agenda and in the meantime, Jamie Carragher has praised ‘fantastic’ Man Utd for sealing the deal for a ‘brilliant player’.

Man Utd signing ‘brilliant player’
Man Utd’s transfer policy over the last decade can be compiled into a book and used as a refresher for football clubs on how not to run a team.

Therefore, Ineos had a tall task of repairing that reputation, which they have done to some extent with a successful 2024/25 summer transfer window and a productive January window as well.

However, the upcoming summer window will be the most important one since they finally have their own man in the dugout with a full pre-season.

It’s a positive sign then that United are moving quickly in the market, and Jamie Carragher has praised the club for closing in on the signing of Matheus Cunha, who ‘fits perfectly’ at Old Trafford.

He said: “I think it’s a great signing, he’s a brilliant player. I’ve watched him play. He was in my team of the season at the halfway point, great start to the season. Looks really sharp. Ruben Amorim likes those two No. 10s in the team and I think he will fit perfectly.

“Manchester United are a fantastic football club, one of the biggest in the world so [I’m not surprised they’re still attracting good players].”

Cunha’s transfer to Man Utd is developing quickly after recent reports that an agreement was close to being reached.

Vitor Pereira, the manager of Wolves, was asked about the move recently and he remained tight-lipped.

He said: “I have the same information as you. I don’t know. I just know he’s my player. He’s committed with the team, he’s working with happiness and we will see what happens. You must ask him. He is happy. I feel he is happy.”

Cunha’s transfer looks like a matter of “when”, and not “if”, and United could well be holding out for the Europa League final to finish before announcing it.

Now it just remains to be seen if that announcement acts as the boost to a successful finish to the season to heighten the optimism or a bandage on a damaged one.
