Arsenal are reportedly in ‘active talks’ to sign Valencia star Cristhian Mosquera, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After failing to win the Premier League title last term, it was thought that the Gunners would prioritise bolstering the attacking department this summer. They have reportedly been working to do that, but simultaneously, they have also been looking to add depth in different areas.

Now, reporting on X, Romano says that Arsenal also want a new centre-back and have been working on a deal to buy Mosquera from Valencia. They have already started negotiating with the player’s representatives and the Spanish side to get the deal done, while the player is ‘keen’ on moving to the Emirates Stadium.

The 21-year-old is valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt and is set to enter the final year of his current contract. Therefore, Arsenal should be able to seal the deal at a cut price.

After ranking through Los Ches’ youth system, the Spaniard has established himself as a key player at Mestalla in recent years, making 37 La Liga appearances last term and keeping eight clean sheets. He even managed to help his side finish in mid-table despite enduring a tough first half of the last season.

After impressing in the Spanish top flight, the youngster was selected to play for his country in the U21 European Championship and helped La Roja reach the knockout stage before losing to England.

Mosquera is 6ft 2in tall and is comfortable playing out from the back. Moreover, he is good in the air and is efficient in defensive contributions. However, he is still young and needs time to grow. Therefore, he might be a very good backup option to William Saliba.

Arsenal initially wanted to sign Dean Huijsen to reinforce the defence, but following his decision to join Real Madrid, Arteta’s side have now identified Mosquera as an alternative option.
