Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo seems to be wandering in the wilderness, according to Paul Scholes.
The English midfielder has been shuffled into numerous positions this season and was even shockingly used as a false nine in the recent loss at home to Crystal Palace.
This move left goal-shy forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee benched, adding to the surprise. Tasking so much from a young talent who shone brightly on his first-team debut last season may be an overburden.
His exceptional performances secured him a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad, where he continued to turn heads. But with another tumultuous season at Old Trafford, Mainoo has been pushed from pillar to post as manager Ruben Amorim scrambles to concoct a victorious strategy.
Scholes aired his misgivings about the 19-year-old prodigy during The Overlap Fan Debate, confessing: “I think Mainoo is lost. I’ve talked about Declan Rice being lost before – I think Mainoo is lost as well. They don’t know what to do with him.
“I don’t think he knows where to play on a football pitch because he’s been played in one of the number 10 positions, he has been played in the two in the midfield, which I can see probably doesn’t suit him because I don’t think the greatest athlete,” reports the Mirror.
“He’s a great footballer. I think the number 10 does suit, [but] the false nine, never in a million years.”
Scholes also spoke about the club’s overall woes, stressing that forging a rock-solid spine this summer is crucial to dodge the horror show of a relegation scrap. He warned: “That spine, that core is so important.
“If they don’t get that right this summer… This might sound ridiculous but the form since this manager’s been in, they could be looking at being in that relegation fight. I’m telling you, it’s been so bad.”
