Manchester United have reportedly opened formal talks for Emiliano Martinez, but this may not be a quick-fire deal to complete.

According to Ole, Manchester United have opened formal talks to sign Emiliano Martinez this summer. The Argentine goalkeeper is viewed as the ideal replacement for the underfire stopper Andre Onana, although negotiations with Aston Villa over the price are expected to drag the deal.

A lot has been reported on Aston Villa’s potential problems with PSR, which indicates they might have to sell a sizeable asset before the June 30 deadline to remain in line with the financial regulations. They do have a handful of top stars they could potentially sell, with Emiliano Martinez part of that group.

The Argentine World Cup winner is open to leaving the club as his demeanor at the end of the season suggested. Aston Villa are reportedly asking €40 million for the keeper named as the best in the world for three years in a row, who cost them £17 million back in 2020 when he arrrived from Arsenal.

Martinez has Atletico Madrid’s interest heading into the summer, while Manchester United are also part of the race. There were rumblings about Saudi Arabia, but the £17 million Aston Villa mainstay is not keen on a switch to the Middle East at the moment and wants to continue at the top level in Europe.

Manchester United have already established contact for Martinez, and it appears they have opened formal talks for the keeper.

Aston Villa are demanding €40 million, which could play a part in dragging the deal. While the report states the Red Devils are open to paying a figure close to that sum, they might want to negotiate the fee down to a certain extent.

Manchester United want Emilian Martinez
Manchester United have grown frustrated with Andre Onana, and despite reports that Ruben Amorim might be open to keeping him, the club might prefer to sell.

The big issue is finding the right suitor who would pay a sizeable fee for the Cameroonian international, and there is a feeling they will only sign Martinez once they can orchestrate a sale of Onana.
