Aryna Sabalenka set to break Iga Swiatek’s many years record ahead of her WTA Finals in Riyadh
Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek have been battling out for command on the WTA Circuit for the last few years not, trading number one spot and major titles. 2025 has been Sabalenka’s year, who is just one win off overtaking Swiatek’s highest points tally back in 2022.
The pair have both competed in the current WTA Finals in Riyadh, the closing chapter of what has been an exhilarating 2025 campaign. While there have been a multitude of winners in major and high ranking WTA events, Sabalenka has never been far off the top step of the podium, which has seen her accumulate a high number of ranking points.
She will be hoping to add even more points with one more match left. While her Polish rival was dumped out in the Round Robin phase, Sabalenka has yet to lose a match enroute to the final. With 1000 points already on her record, she can muster up another 500 if she is to win in today’s final.
Her opponent, howver, has also gone through the whole event without being unbeaten. Elena Rybakina is looking very dangerous on court, but will need to keep her high level throughout when playing against the world number one, with $5.23 million for the winner due to their unbeaten streak, along with 1,500 ranking points.
Sabalenka in touching distance of Swiatek personal best
This is the ninth final the 27-year-old has reached in 2025. The lowest tier of these is WTA 500. This shows the remarkable consistency she possesses at the top of the sport and in the biggest events. She started with a WTA 500 title in Brisbane before losing her Australian Open crown to Madison Keys in the final.
She made two more finals on the Sunshine swing, showing off her incredible talent on hardcourt surfaces. While 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva got the better of her at Indian Wells, she was not going to let Jessica Pegula prevent her of a title in the Miami Open. She collected her second WTA 1000 triumph of the year in Madrid, overcoming Coco Gauff. The American would extract her revenge at the perfect time, defeating the Belarusian in the Roland Garros final for her second Grand Slam, and more misery for Sabalenka.
A Wimbledon semi-final came and went. While these were frustrating results for Sabalenka, all the while she was adding points to her ever-growing tally, making her number one position more comfortable. This was massively aided by regaining her US Open title, in a week where Swiatek of Gauff could have snatched the number one ranking off her. She then made a run to the Wuhan Open semi-finals before climaxing at her second WTA Finals final. It is an event that she has never won before, losing out to Caroline Garcia back in 2022.
Just a whisker behind Swiatek’s 2022 tally
Currently, Sabalenka sits on a hugely impressive 10,870 points. She will jump up to 11,370 with a title in Riyadh today. This will surpass Swiatek’s hugely impressive 2022 season where she culminated on 11,085 points. This was helped by two Grand Slam titles, four WTA 1000 triumphs, and in total eight titles from nine finals.
This is looking extremely vulnerable to a charging Sabalenka, with the four-time Grand Slam champion looking to break the miraculous 11,000 points barrier for the first time. Her name will be once again written with the stars of the sport.
However, the pair still find themselves way off the best. Williams’s superior 2013 campaign Since 2013, the 11,000 mark has only been surpassed by Swiatek in 2022, and possibly Sabalenka in 2025. In 2013, Serena Williams not only reached this fabled point, but charged past it to finish on a mind-boggling 13,260 points.
The American completed this by collecting 11 titles from 13 finals participated in. This includes two Grand Slam titles, a WTA Finals trophy and five WTA 1000 successes, with another two final appearances. If it was not for a fourth-round exit in Wimbledon, her tally could have gone even higher, representing her legendary status in the sport. For Sabalenka and Swiatek, there is work to do to climb to those distant peaks.
