Manchester United have reportedly failed with a second bid for Bryan Mbeumo, but the Cameroonian forward has informed Brentford that he only wants to join the Red Devils.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that United are still short of the Bees’ valuation of the 25-year-old, with their latest offer of £55m + £7.5m in add-ons still not enough to seal a deal. A first proposal of £45m + £10m in add-ons was turned down earlier this summer and there have been weeks of negotiations to no avail.
Tottenham Hotspur came into the picture amid Thomas Frank’s appointment as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement. Mbeumo’s interest in a move to Spurs had risen due to his relationship with his former manager, but he has made it clear he wants a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United turned their focus to Mbeumo after sealing Matheus Cunha’s signature for £62.5m when the summer transfer window opened. They saw off competition from Newcastle United and Arsenal despite those two clubs offering Champions League football next season.
Mbeumo has a year left on his contract and Brentford have the option to extend for a further year, but he’s pushing for an Old Trafford switch. The initial offer fell “some way short” of the Bees’ valuation, and their latest proposal has also failed to persuade the west London outfit to sell.
Talks are continuing between the two clubs, but United remain cautious and are refusing to overpay following years of questionable recruitment before INEOS’ arrival. The Red Devils want the Cameroon international to join up with Ruben Amorim’s squad before their pre-season tour begins next month.
Spurs are said to be “no longer pursuing the situation” and have denied claims that they made a bid for the former Troyes attacker. This could change if United fail to agree on a deal and decide to look elsewhere, but it feels as though a third bid could finally bring the lengthy saga to a close.
Mbeumo, who Rio Ferdinand called “ridiculous” is being eyed up for the right-wing berth in Amorim’s team and would offer much-needed firepower alongside Cunha. He was among the best performers in the Premier League last season, finishing joint-fourth in the goalscoring charts with 20 goals.
