Coco Gauff had a roller coaster 2025 WTA season, and she provided an eloquent description of her feelings about it.
The 21-year-old’s season officially ended when she lost to Aryna Sabalenka at the 2025 WTA Finals. Gauff would have reached the semifinals by beating the world No. 1, but she fell short in a 6-7, 2-6 loss.
That meant Gauff did not become the first person since her childhood idol Serena Williams to defend the WTA Finals title. Williams won three consecutive crowns from 2012 to 2014, with the last of those being her fifth and last.
Gauff endured some challenging moments in 2025. She exited in the 2025 Wimbledon Championships opening round, and was comprehensively defeated by Naomi Osaka in the 2025 US Open fourth round.
The world No. 3 also continued to have severe issues with his second serve. Gauff hit over 400 double faults for the second consecutive season, and it remains the most consistent impediment to further success.
However, those lows are outweighed by what Gauff achieved in 2025. She won her maiden French Open title by recovering from losing the opening set against Aryna Sabalenka, triumphing 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Gauff showed an outstanding mentality to recover and played a much smarter tactical match than her opponent in the windy conditions. The American also came back from dropping the first set against Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final.
Other notable achievements were securing the 2025 Wuhan Open title, her first since hiring biomechanics coach Gavin MacMillan to help with her serve, and winning the 2025 United Cup with Team USA.
In an Instagram post, Gauff wrote that it was a lengthy season with some tough moments, but that she feels there were mainly positives to take from 2025 as she looks forward to starting again in 2026.
“My 2025 season is officially over and it was a longggg one. I played my first match of this season December 29th, 2024 and my last match of the season November 6th, 2025.”
“It was filled with some disappointments but mainly positives and when I look back at it, I feel proud of all the things I accomplished. I love this sport and I am grateful for all of its ups and downs.”Despite being a top player for the past few years, Gauff has not lost sight of the fact that she is living a childhood dream as a professional player, and she thanked everyone who has supported her throughout 2025.
“Very few feelings come close to the euphoria you feel when you are living in a dream come true or a prayer come to fruition and I am eternally grateful to God for these experiences and the opportunity to feel this feeling constantly.”
“Thank you guys for your love and support, thank you to my family, my friends, my team, and God. Time for a little rest and then back to the grind….see you guys back on court next year, we uppppp.”
Gauff’s work ethic, talent, mentality, and still being just 21 are why she could dominate women’s tennis in the future.
