At the end of June, Sunnmøringen was second last in the Obosliga with nine points. Rekdal and assistant coach Geir Frigård were then brought in as rescuers, and the duo signed a contract that extended to the current season.

AaFK finished in 9th place in the Obosliga with 40 points – four points behind Kongsvinger’s 6th place, which qualified for the Eliteserien.
This is Rekdal’s second term in Aalesund. In his previous period from 2008 to 2012, Sunnmøringen won the cup in 2009 and 2011.
