Deal Completed: Arsenal’s key player join Real Madrid despite Mikel Arteta’s efforts to stop the transfer- Fans are not happy
Thomas Partey is reportedly on the verge of finding a new home as he is ‘set to join’ a Champions League club following his Arsenal exit this summer.
The midfielder was let go by the Gunners once his contract expired with the club, bringing an end to five years of service at the Emirates Stadium.
Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth around £45m. It made him the most expensive Ghanian footballer in history at the time and he became a key figure for Mikel Arteta.
He played 167 times over the course of five years, with nine goals and seven assists to his name, but with the recent acquisition of Martin Zubimendi, he was deemed surplus to requirements and let go. It didn’t take him long to find a new home, though.

The risk with leaving a football club and entering free agency is that a footballer might struggle to find a new home. That isn’t the case with Partey, though, and David Ornstein has reported that he is ‘set to join’ Villarreal in La Liga. It will mark a return to Spain for the midfielder, who spent his entire senior career there before moving to north London in 2020.
The move will allow Partey to continue playing in the Champions League too, with Villarreal qualifying for the competition last season after they finished fifth in the La Liga table.
He would join forces with the likes of Dani Parejo and Pape Gueye in midfield, as well as reuniting with former Arsenal man Nicholas Pepe who joined the Spanish side on a free transfer in 2024 and recently signed a new deal to extend his stay with the team.
