Deal Completed: Manchester United has officially confirmed the signing of €87million attacker and the Reds’ rivals are not happy about the transfer as they’re planning to sue them over the transfer

Italy have a long-standing tradition of producing supremely talented defensive players. There is a whole host of names to pick from and despite the country’s visible downfall in recent years, the defence continues to produce some gems.

One of the most talented players that the nation has produced in recent times is Giorgi Scalvini. He shared more than just his first name with the legendary Chiellini and has a very similar mentality to the Juventus legend.

The 21-year-old, capped 8 times at the senior level already, is a cornerstone of Atalanta’s team, impressing both with his defensive ability and his quality with the ball at his feet. However, last season was an absolute horror show for the Italian.

Scalvini played just 8 games all season for the Italian side across all competitions, missing the early phases of the season with a cruciate ligament injury and then subsequently, suffering a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the run-in.

Despite a season of injury-marred inconsistency, as per Caught Offside, Man Utd are plotting a move to finally sign a player they have already been interested in before. The Red Devils have been linked with the £51.8million star since last year.

Versatile Italian

One aspect of Scalvini’s game that is always good to have is his versatility. Although his predominant position continues to be the central defense, the 21-year-old is equally comfortable of playing as a defensive midfielder if needed.

Stylistically, the Italian would be a great fit into one of the three center-back positions in Amorim’s system as it would allow him to operate in his preferred role but also make use of his abilities on the ball if he ventures forward into midfield.

That said, Man Utd already have Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui capable of playing in that position and they don’t exactly need another option in that position.

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils spend so much money to sign a player for a position that they are relatively well-stocked in. There are other areas that are more desperate of a change and only time will tell how this transfer saga plays out.
