Arsenal have had a productive summer transfer window with four high-profile signings.
They have so far confirmed the arrivals of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke.
Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera has already undergone his medical, and a transfer is set to be completed soon.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Arsenal have been in contact with the agents of Eberechi Eze for two weeks.
However, they have yet to open formal negotiations with Crystal Palace for the England international.
If a deal can’t be agreed for Eze, the Gunners could turn their attention to RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons, according to Romano’s update.
The club’s pursuit of a versatile playmaker could still depend on player sales. Reiss Nelson are among those expected to depart.
Simons would be a better signing than Eze for Arsenal
Eze had his best-ever campaign with the Eagles, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists. He made the headlines with the FA Cup-winning goal against Manchester City at the Wembley Stadium in May.
The 27-year-old seems prepared for a bigger challenge in his career. Arsenal are aware of the player’s £68 million release clause payable in three instalments, but hope to sign him for less.
If Palace are not open to negotiating payment terms, Arsenal could shift focus to landing Simons, who could be available for around £60.6m due to a gentleman’s agreement with RB Leipzig.
In our view, Simons would be a much better acquisition for the Gunners. The Dutchman managed 19 goal involvements for Leipzig last term despite missing two months with an ankle injury.
Like Eze, Simons can operate on the left wing or in the number 10 role. He is also comfortable on the right flank. His versatility could be a major factor behind the club’s ongoing interest in him.
Simons is also a better finisher than Eze. He had a shot-to-goal conversion rate of 20 percent in the league last term compared to the latter’s eight percent. He is five years younger than the Englishman too.
The Dutchman will have more time on his hands to adapt to the Gunners’ tactical set-up and become a key player.
