DONE DEAL: £102million striker has finally completes medical to join Manchester United as superstar joined on five-years transfer deal- Announcement will hold tomorrow

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is in ‘direct contact’ with Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres over a potential move to Old Trafford, according to journalist Ben Jacobs – although that doesn’t necessarily mean a deal will be done for the Swedish star, with United likely to bow out of any deal if it starts to turn into a transfer saga.

The Red Devils have been in the market for a striker for some time, missing out on the addition of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town after being gazumped by Chelsea in the race for the England youth international – and now, with Gyokeres so far failing to end up in advanced talks with any clubs in the Champions League, a potential deal taking the former Brighton star to the Theatre of Dreams has opened up slightly.

Jacobs: Viktor Gyokeres in ‘Contact’ With Ruben Amorim

United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, whilst Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo continues to be linked after naming the Red Devils as his preferred destination should he leave the west London club.

But now it’s Gyokeres who is moving closer to a potential move to Old Trafford, and Jacobs believes that although he’s open to a move and in direct contact with manager Amorim, it doesn’t particularly mean that the Red Devils will close a move under director Jason Wilcox, who will take a steadfast approach to signing new, key players. Jacobs said on The United Stand’s YouTube channel:

“That’s the key consideration with Gyokeres.

“Just because he’s open – and is in contact, I’m told, with Ruben Amorim – it doesn’t mean if Manchester United explore it, they won’t resolve it quickly and walk away.

“So starting by bidding for a player under the new kind of Jason Wilcox, Christopher Vivell-led model, doesn’t automatically mean finishing the transfer, paying what it takes and just getting it done.

“There will be scenarios where Manchester United say ‘we don’t want summer sagas, and we’re prepared to walk away’.

“That where we’re at with Gyokeres at the moment.”

Gyokeres was signed by Amorim two years ago after an outstanding campaign at Coventry City, and he’s since burst into life with 95 goals in 100 outings for the Lisbon-based side, helping them to a domestic double this season – being called a ‘game-changing’ player in the process.

If he can continue the form he showed under Amorim in the Premier League, it could be one of the best deals of the summer – especially with Rasmus Hojlund only scoring four in the top-flight this season.
