Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha on a long-term contract, Fabrizio Romano has reported.
The Red Devils are set to pay the Brazilian forward’s £62.5m release clause in instalments and have reached a verbal agreement with Cunha on a five-year deal, with an option for a further year.
Cunha is now set to become Ruben Amorim’s first summer signing at Old Trafford, with formal steps and contract details to be checked this week, according to Romano.
Cunha was heavily linked with a Molineux departure during the January transfer window before signing a new four-year deal with Wolves in February.
The Brazilian forward enjoyed an exceptional Premier League campaign under Vitor Pereira, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances.
United are expected to further strengthen their frontline once the deal for Cunha is finalised, with the arrival of a new number nine also anticipated at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have identified Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap as their primary target, while a move to reunite Amorim with Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres now appears complicated following their Europa League final defeat last Wednesday.
That loss meant United failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League and will miss out on European football for the first time since the 2014/15 season.
Amorim’s side have also endured a miserable domestic campaign, finishing 15th in the Premier League after winning only once in their final nine games.
Their 2-0 home victory over Aston Villa on Sunday saw United leapfrog Wolves in the league table.
