DONE DEAL: Manchester United completes first summer transfer signing as striker snubs Arsenal and Chelsea to join the Reds- Medical Completed and announced planned to be made today

Manchester United are poised to sign a new striker during the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils were recently keen on landing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, but the England youth international decided to join Chelsea instead.

The hierarchy are weighing up alternatives, and Corriere dello Sport (page 14) claim Lille striker Jonathan David sees joining United as one of his priorities.

The Canada international has his sights on a Premier League switch, but he is more likely to end up moving to the Italian top flight this summer.

David will be a free agent when his contract expires on June 30. He is reportedly eyeing an annual salary of £5.5 million with a £17m signing-on package.

Juventus seem the most interested in recruiting him. The Bianconeri plan to offer £4.65m per year in wages with a signing-on fee of around £12.63m.

David may not suit Amorim’s playing style
The 25-year-old had a fantastic 2024/25 campaign with Lille. He registered 25 goals and 12 assists from 49 appearances across all competitions.

David managed nine goal contributions in the Champions League. He is now eyeing a bigger challenge, but United are not interested for now.

That does not surprise us. David has been a consistent performer in Ligue 1, but he may struggle to cope with the higher intensity and physicality of the Premier League.

David is fluent with his distribution and movement in the final third, but he is not the best in the air. The Canadian won just 29 percent of his aerial duels last term.

He has also been prone to losing possession in the final third. Manager Ruben Amorim may ideally want a new striker who is good in the air and can hold up play effectively.

Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres would be the perfect addition to the United squad, and it has been reported that the Swede has not ruled out a reunion with Amorim.
