Manchester United have a limited budget this summer but the Red Devils have still showcased their ability to sign some of the Premier League’s most in-demand stars – despite having no European football next term.
Matheus Cunha completed his move to the club on Sunday, after his £62.5m release clause was activated by the Red Devils. The Brazilian midfielder had been linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League, including the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Now United look set to be well ahead of their rivals in the race for another Premier League star. Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford has been the subject of interest from United as well as Newcastle and Arsenal but he prefers a move to Old Trafford.
Now, the Red Devils have made a firm move for the forward who has been branded as unplayable by his manager Thomas Frank while former Chelsea player Jason Cundy dubbed him a ‘mini Mo Salah’
Man Utd make opening offer for Bryan Mbeumo
United have submitted an opening offer worth up to £55m for Mbeumo. That is according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who reported late on Wednesday night: “Man Utd submit opening offer to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. £45m + £10m add-ons; some way below level of fee needed for Brentford FC to consider sale. Talks ongoing as MUFC work to agree deal. Cameroon forward keen on transfer.”
It appears the initial offer will not be enough for the Red Devils to secure Mbeumo but with talks ongoing between the clubs, there will be optimism from the Red Devils to get the deal done. Mbeumo is currently on £50,000 a week at Brentford and is said to want £250,000 to join United.
Last season was his best goal-scoring campaign in the Premier League as he netted 20 goals after starting all 38 games for Brentford. He also provided seven assists.
Thomas Frank has already said what it will take for Brentford to sell Bryan Mbeumo
Speaking last week, Brentford boss Thomas Frank insisted it would take a lot of money for the Bees to part ways with Mbeumo. They said: “It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot.
“Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done. There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for.
“I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don’t look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer.
“How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player.”
Mbeumo has one year left on his deal at Brentford but the Bees have the option to extend it by 12 months, which still gives them plenty of power when it comes to negotiating a fee.
