Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim only had words of praise for his winger Amad Diallo who set the Old Trafford on fire on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils gave the Portuguese manager a happy home debut in the Premier League, breezing past Everton by four unanswered goals.

Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee alternated in goal-scoring duties. The Englishman scored the first and the third strikes, while the Dutchman, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since September, buried home the second and the fourth.

While Diallo’s name wasn’t on the scoresheet, his influence was undeniable.

The 22-year-old started as a right wingback in the newly adopted 3-4-2-1 formation, and proved to be an utter thorn in the side of the Everton defenders.

The Ivorian dispossessed Jarrad Branthwaite in the play that culminated in the second goal, before providing the assists for the third and fourth strikes.

Therefore, Amorim was impressed by what he saw from the former Atalanta man, crediting former caretaker coach Ruud van Nistelrooy for his significantly improved displays.

“He is really big in talent, but small in size,” said the Portuguese manager in his post-match interview with BBC Match of the Day.

“He did a great job but he also has to improve. He is a great moment. Ruud van Nistelrooy helped him a lot in his games in charge and now he’s helping me.

Amorim insisted his team’s displays must improve despite what the result might suggest.

“It was far from a perfect performance. We have to improve, you can feel that in the game. After 15 minutes Everton controlled the game and it was difficult for us and we were losing the second ball.

“I felt that the players could solve some problems that we have as a team because of the quality that they have but it was far from a perfect performance but a really good result and tough match.”

Nevertheless, the new Man United boss is pleased with the more buoyant atmosphere at Old Trafford, even though he admits this often accompanies a managerial change.

“It helps to have a new face, it always helps. We have to be very clear to our fans and this will always help. Rather than trying to convince the fans about this performance, we have a lot to do, it will take time.

“Sometimes we are not playing well but defended together. Our fans just ask for hard work and then in time they will ask for better football.”
