While Amad Diallo’s incredible individual brilliance saw Manchester United beat Manchester City, Ruben Amorim’s role has been somewhat overlooked.
As celebration ensued on Sunday evening inside the Etihad, one man was completely composed after a slight fist pump. That being Ruben Amorim who was back to his composed demeanour within seconds.
Amad Diallo was heralded by pundits for his excellent end to the Manchester derby, and his teammates agreed as they gave the little magician the spotlight after the game. Amad used this to kiss the badge, a sign perhaps that the contract stalemate could soon find a happy conclusion.
Manchester United’s comeback win over City is the biggest moment of Amorim’s reign so far, and he will certainly be hoping that it turns out to be a watershed moment for the club.
Amorim has certainly made his mark on the club so far, with a clear identity and style of play implemented as Harry Maguire explained. But it goes beyond that, Amorim has his players embodying him on the pitch, as all great managers do.

Unlike under Erik ten Hag, Amorim has got his players reading from the same hymn sheet, and Amad’s winner demonstrated this perfectly.
In new footage of the goal, one camera was focused on Amorim and caught how he orchestrated the chance for Amad.
Show Max Sport showed the angle of the goal, in which Amorim could be seen shouting “Amad”, at Lisandro Martinez when the Argentine was on the ball.
Moments later, the butcher launched an excellent pass to Amad and the goal was subsequently scored.
This is an impressive display of how switched on Amorim is and his vision on the football pitch. However, he will hope that in the future he will not need to call out the passes and the players can pick them out themselves.
Amorim will hope this works out better than Jose Mourinho with Luke Shaw
Amorim conducting play from the sidelines brought us back to that infamous and toxic interview with Jose Mourinho, in which the Portuguese manager told reporters that Luke Shaw had played with, “his body [but] with my brain”.
“He was in front of me and I was making every decision for him,” said Mourinho to the BBC in 2017 in relation to Shaw.
“He has to change his football brain.”
This interview is nothing like the situation of Amorim telling Martinez who to pass to, but Amorim will hope that it leads to a happier environment than United were under Mourinho.
