When Manchester United were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, there was a sense of dread as the club’s summer transfer plans took a major hit with no European football.
However, in the weeks since, the Red Devils have confirmed a deal for Matheus Cunha and remain in talks to sign Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo after having a initial bid worth up to £55m knocked back last week.
To secure more signings, United will be forced to sell players but there are already plans for Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malaica and Alejandro Garnacho to leave the club this summer. The former quartet all left Old Trafford on loan last season while Ruben Amorim has told Garnacho he is free to leave this summer after the forward publicly expressed his frustration at being benched for the Europa League final.
Those exits would total well over £150m, giving Amorim some much-needed funds to bolster his squad as he looks to sign players more suited to his formation and tactics.
Man Utd advancing talks for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres
While Cunha has joined and Mbeumo wants to move to Old Trafford, Sporting CP superstar Viktor Gyokeres is also open to a United transfer this summer, in what could prove to be a monumental window for the Red Devils.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that United are in contact with the player’s camp. He is also a target for Premier League rivals Arsenal but they appear to have focused their attention on Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig.
Meanwhile, Fichajes in Spain have claimed that United are willing to pay close to £60m to seal a deal for the player as they look to make a key signing to address their lack of goals. The report claims that “talks are quite advanced” and the parties are optimistic of coming to an agreement soon.
Amorim knows the player quite well and Gyokeres could quickly settle into system at the Red Devils. The deal is affordable for United if they can move on some of the players noted above.
Sporting boss hails Viktor Gyokeres
Speaking in April, Sporting head coach Rui Borges laid on some huge praise for Gyokeres. The Sweden international scored a stunning 54 goals in 52 games last season while also providing 13 assists. Since moving to Sporting, he has netted 97 times in 102 games along with 28 assists.
“Viktor is a player… I think there are no words: it is unlikely that another player of his quality will emerge in our league over the next few years. He is clearly above average,” said Borges.
“Sporting recognised his talent, and here we are. Fortunately, we have him at Sporting. We must make the most of the time we have with him because he is truly exceptional.
“I have said this before, and I will continue to say it: he brings a lot to the team, and his teammates are aware of what he contributes, which is why they look for him during games.
“The collective effort also plays a role, as no one can succeed alone. Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal.”
