Madrid: With two goals from star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal defeated Poland 5-1 on Friday to ensure their place in the quarter-finals of the Nations League football tournament. Scotland kept their hopes of remaining in the top tier of the tournament alive by recording their first win in nine matches by beating Croatia 1–0.
Meanwhile, the match between Romania and Kosovo in Bucharest was stopped in injury time and later abandoned after a goalless draw. There was a scuffle between the players of both the teams and the Kosovar players left the field. European football’s governing body UEFA did not say why the game was stopped, but reportedly the Kosova players were upset after hearing pro-Serbian chants.
“The UEFA Nations League match between Romania and Kosovo has been cancelled,” the football body said in a statement on its website. UEFA will provide further information in due course. Spain, which has already secured first place in Group A4, beat Denmark 2-1 in Copenhagen. France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal have confirmed their places in the quarter-finals.
Ronaldo performed brilliantly in the match played in Porto and was named the best player of the match. He scored the 134th goal of his international career on a penalty kick and then after some time scored on an overhead kick, taking his total number of goals for Portugal to 135. With this defeat, Poland’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals ended.
