New details are coming to light about how the accident with his former coach was caused APOELGiorgos Platis. As it emerged from the examinations of experts of the Electromechanical Service and the Traffic, before the accident a fire had broken out inside the vehicle.

Platis had lost his life in the early hours of last Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Kokkinotrimithia. His vehicle, under circumstances that are being investigated, veered off course, resulting in to successively hit the concrete divider and the metal railing of the road and catch fire. The driver of the vehicle was fatally injured in the collision. His identity was confirmed after scientific tests.
Meanwhile, another driver who died in a traffic accident in the area of Famagusta was removed from the list of asphalt victims, since the autopsy showed pathological causes.
However, the list of those killed this year in road conflicts is long, since 28 of our fellow human beings lost their lives in 25 deadlywhich is 11 more than the corresponding period last year in 2023 where 16 fatalities occurred with 17 deaths.
From a study of this year’s fatal accidents, the following alarming results emerge: Five of the seven pedestrians killed this year were at fault, while 13 drivers or passengers in vehicles were not wearing a seat belt. As evidenced by traffic police tests, five of them would be alive today if they were wearing their seat belts because their seats were intact. Also this year eight motorcyclists were killed. From the analysis of the traffic, it appears that the cameras are not “to blame” for the increase in deaths observed this year, since neither pedestrians are checked nor motorcyclists, because they take care to hide their registration numbers and are not detected.
It is noted that the traffic problem will be discussed on Wednesday 11 September 2024 at the Road Safety Councilwhich was convened by its president, Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis. There, in the presence of the Minister of Justice, Marios Hartsiotis and the Chief of Police, as well as the Director of Public Works, the Traffic Police will analyze this year’s road traffic collisions, the causes that caused them and measures to reduce deaths.
It is noted that in a meeting held in June which was convened by the Chief of Police Stelios Papatheodorou, the road conflicts that occurred from the beginning of the year until then were evaluated and it was decided to take further measures from the Police side. These measures were:
– The intensification of traffic controls and policing campaigns,
– The increase of information and enlightenment campaigns,
– The re-evaluation of the placement points of the mobile photo-marking cameras
– The further activity of the members of the Police in the road network.
