Manchester United are improving with every game on the pitch as Ruben Amorim’s philosophy takes shape but the work off the pitch is continuing at pace too.

After the previous summer’s transfer window was a success despite minimal planning time for the new executive team, the next summer promises a lot more.

Not only will the team have a settled manager in place, but the executive team will also be clearer about their roles now that Dan Ashworth’s departure is official.

Man Utd have already started work on the window for next summer and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the club have sealed their first signing of 2025.

Manchester United have made a concerted effort under Ineos to get their hands on the superstars before they become superstars which was reflected in their work last summer.

The likes of Chido Obi, Samuel Lusale, and Sekou Kone, just to name a few, arrived to strengthen the youth ranks and fortify the future of the club.

None of them have made a senior appearance and that is likely to be the case, maybe except for Chido Obi, who could be Marcus Rashford’s replacement in the long-term.

Romano has revealed that the youth revolution has received another shot in the arm in the form of Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who’s set to join the club next July.

Romano said Leon has “signed all documents” and he’ll arrive at Old Trafford for a fee of $4 million in fixed money, plus $1 million in “easy” add-ons, and $2-3k in difficult add-ons.

The deal was engineered by Jason Wilcox, who’s set to take a prominent role at the club following Dan Ashworth’s departure, with the input from South American lead scout Giuseppe Antonaccio pivotal too.

Diego Leon at Man Utd- likely first-team signing?

It is easy to look at this transfer of a teenager from the Paraguayan league as another long-term move but Diego Leon has the capacity to surprise many.

For starters Leon has one quality Harry Amass does not, which could aid him in jumping over the academy left-back in the breakout race.

More importantly, there’s a clear hole in the left wing-back position at the club, and if Leon can show even some initial ability of being a sporadic contributor, then United will save themselves millions in the market.

With Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Tyrell Malacia, then Diego Leon and Harry Amass, United will have plenty of options for the wing-back role, excluding players like Amad who have settled brilliantly on one side.

Leon is likely to go with the first-team pre-season squad next summer and the experience of working with Ruben Amorim will be priceless to start with.

Impressing in pre-season could see him being catapulted straight into the first-team picture which would be the ideal scenario for United.

Even if that doesn’t happen, his potential should ensure United have got a bargain at this stage of his career, the kind of move the club has been too reticent to make in recent years.
