The head of the academies of PAOK’s basketball department, Giorgos Valavanidis, has breathed his last. The deceased suffered a heart attack and “died” at the age of 50, spreading sadness throughout the basketball area of Greece.
Giorgos Valavanidis was born on February 16, 1974 in Germany, originally from Alexandroupoli. He started his career in the Fero Evros team and in 1988 he transferred to PAOK.
With “Dikephalos” he competed in the infrastructure divisions and at the age of 17 he was promoted to the first team, in 1991. He stayed at Thessaloniki until 1994, winning the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991, the Greek Championship in 1992 and the Korats Cup in 1994.
He then “moved” to M.E.N.T where he stayed for 6 years and then competed in Xanthi, Kolossos, Nikopoli Preveza, Panorama, Apollona Kalamaras, AS Asvestochori, Eleftheroupoli and Zephyro.
From 2010 he was a coach at the PAOK academies and from 2013 he was the development manager of the academies, having completed his studies at the Gymnastics Academy.
The “black and white” KAE issued an official statement in which it expressed its condolences for his loss. The announcement states:
“KAE PAOK mateco expresses its pain and its deep sadness for the sudden death of Giorgos Valavanidis who passed away today, so prematurely at the age of 50.
We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Giorgos Valavanidis. The shock of his loss is enormous. His void is irreplaceable.
