Arsenal have reportedly reignited their interest in signing Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, as per The Sun.
Since William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes formed the Gunners’ first-choice centre-back pairing, they have become the best side defensively in the Premier League.
However, they struggled with goal-scoring problems last term, and set-pieces were their main weapon to score goals. The North London club showcased the same issue against Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal in the pre-season.
They failed to find the back of the net against Spurs and netted from a set-piece and a penalty against the Yellow Submarine. Therefore, Arsenal have prioritised revamping the attacking department this summer.
Viktor Gyokeres has been purchased to strengthen the centre-forward position, while Noni Madueke has joined to support Bukayo Saka. However, Mikel Arteta also wants a new left winger.
Rodrygo Goes, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Gordon have all been suggested as potential targets. Now, The Sun report that Arsenal have reignited their interest in signing Lookman and could make a formal approach over the coming days.
Lookman to Arsenal
La Dea usually are hard nuts in negotiations and won’t let their star man leave for cheap with his existing deal set to run until 2027. They have slapped a £45m price tag on his head. However, the player is said to be keen on leaving to take the next step in his career, so he has handed in a transfer request to force a move.
Lookman has flourished in his career as a second striker under Gian Piero Gasperini at Gewiss Stadium, but is also comfortable on the left flank. In 40 appearances across all competitions, the 27-year-old scored 20 goals and registered six assists last term.
He previously played in the Premier League with Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, but struggled to showcase his best. However, at his prime, it is expected that he wouldn’t face the same challenges in the English top flight should he move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
However, considering Arsenal are building a squad to win the Premier League title, they would be better off going for Premier League-proven players like Eze or Gordon to reinforce the frontline.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure Lookman’s service before the end of this transfer window.
