Stefanos Tsitsipas failed to find answers to Arthur Fish’s excellent serve and was defeated 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Basel tournament, staying out of the top four and missing the chance to “live” again battle for the ATP Finals.
The 20-year-old Frenchman (No. 20 in the world ranking) was in very good shape on his serve and did not allow Tsitsipas to reach a break point even once in the match, taking a fairly comfortable victory and continuing his course in the tournament.
Tsitsipas saved two set points at 5-4 in the first set and took a 4-3 lead into the tie-break, but then Fish took three consecutive crucial points to make it 7-5, taking the set hard. In the second set, the young Frenchman took advantage of a bad service game by Tsitsipas, broke and took a 3-2 lead, to close the match with another break (6-3).
As for the ATP Finals, Tsitsipas still has some hope of earning a spot, but he will need to do exceptionally well at the Bercy Masters (28/10-3/11). Nevertheless, the prolonged deformity that the Greek tennis player is going through makes such a reversal very difficult.
