FEE AGREED: Manchester United agreed to pay £120m to sign Ruben Amorim’s preferred striker as the star agree personal terms to join

Manchester United under Ruben Amorim are looking to identify different jigsaw pieces that can help form a puzzle.

At the moment, there are very few players that the Portuguese tactician seems to trust completely, and this is reflected in his team selection.

Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui seem to be some of the players who Amorim wants to work with as he looks to build a winning project at Old Trafford. However, the board will have to back him with signings.

One player that Manchester United have been linked with repeatedly over the last few seasons is Barcelona midfield star, Frenkie de Jong.

Now, as per Spanish source, Nacional, the Red Devils are willing to offer the Dutch midfield star a signing bonus of £12.6m to sign him on a free transfer in the summer of 2026.

The Dutchman’s contract expires in less than 18 months and he has not yet shown inclination of signing a new deal with Barcelona.

This could prompt the Catalan club to sell him on a bargain fee in the summer of 2025 but Man Utd might urge the player to run down his deal in exchange for a lucrative salary and signing bonus.

Should Man Utd sign Frenkie de Jong?

De Jong had a 2024 to forget, missing the majority of the first half of the year with an ankle injury that also kept him out of the Euros and once he returned, he struggled to play like his old self.

However, the turn of the calendar year seems to have brought with it good fortune for the Dutchman.

Since 2025 began, De Jong has started putting in a string of good performances for Hansi Flick’s team and the German coach gave him a much deserved start against Valencia in Barcelona’s 7-1 rout. The midfielder played a pivotal role in the game and looked to be back to his very best.

Currently, one midfield slot at Manchester United seems to be locked in by Manuel Ugarte, who has been stepping up his game with every passing week.

Having already played under the Portuguese tactician at Sporting CP, he has hardly taken any time to adapt to the system.

However, Kobbie Mainoo has struggled largely so far, with the role of the box-to-box midfielder not really suiting him at this stage of his career. This is a role that is perfect for someone like Frenkie de Jong to thrive.
