Soon you can go skiing in the Granåsen complex

Snow is driven out into the trail network On November 19, work started on laying out the artificial snow in Granåsen. It will form the sole of the skiing track during the WC in Trondheim in February 2025.

Early Tuesday morning, the work started with removing snow from the trail network in Granåsen. The snow from last season has been stored under sawdust in the parking lot all summer.

– We are starting to remove snow on the west side this year. It’s in the stadium and in the area around the arena building, says operations manager in Trondheim municipality, Pål Bjørset.

Operations in Trondheim municipality – Sports, park and forest, with responsibility for the trail network in Granåsen.

– We had 35,000–36,000 cubic meters of snow in stock, but there are maybe 30,000 cubic meters left there now, says Bjørset.

The snow pile does not want to be completely emptied. Soon they want to start production of new artificial snow at the same place.

Although it has snowed quite a bit in the area in recent days, this is not enough to make trails. In the forest, on the east side of Smistadvegen, snow will be made on the spot.

– In the second week of December, it will be open for skiing in the facility. The 21 day notice looks pretty good. Even if it gets a little warmer in periods, it gets cold again, says Bjørset.

In the worst case

The artificial snow that is laid out now forms the foundation of the trail network.

– We are putting out a sole of 50 cm and we hope that will last until the WC.

– Do you have a plan B, if the snow melts before the WC?

– No, it doesn’t melt. But we are going to re-produce snow before the WC starts. In the worst case, we have to stop using the facility for a period. Stopped driving on the snow, milling it and processing it. But anything can happen, it’s outdoors, says Bjørset.

And he has a little appeal for people at the stadium in the next few days.

– Keep your distance from the machines. Make eye contact with the drivers if you are near them. We have many kindergartens like yours visiting the facility, so we have a lot of focus on safety and hazards.
