It’s been a busy summer already for Arsenal, with plenty of movement behind the scenes as the club looks to add real firepower to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

While several high-profile names have been linked, it appears the Gunners have quietly laid the groundwork for what could be a blockbuster addition out wide.

The Athletic have today reported that the club have done “significant background work” on Real Madrid’s Rodrygo as a potential summer signing.

With Mikel Arteta keen to bolster his attacking options, Rodrygo has emerged as a standout candidate. The 24-year-old Brazilian, who scored 6 La Liga goals for Real Madrid last season, is viewed as a player who could provide elite-level quality and versatility in Arsenal’s frontline. While any potential deal remains at a very early stage, preliminary talks have already taken place between the clubs.

Rodrygo is not the only name under consideration. Arsenal continue to explore a number of options for the left-wing position, with Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman both on the shortlist. Gordon, 24, is admired internally for his direct style and Premier League experience, while Lookman, 27, is coming off an outstanding campaign in Serie A, capped by a Europa League final hat-trick.

The same report says that Arsenal have so far been unwilling to meet Atalanta’s asking price for Lookman, which indicates they have seriously explored the deal. As for Gordon, Newcastle are unlikely to entertain offers below a significant premium, given the England international’s status and contract situation.

Any high-profile addition to the wing could be contingent on player sales. Leandro Trossard, who made 34 Premier League appearances last season, may be the one to make way. Turkish giants Fenerbahce have already tabled a €15million bid for the Belgian, with a three-year contract reportedly agreed between the player and the club, as Fresh Arsenal reported last week.
